Sisters of Today

Sister Chanel McNamara

Profiled July 2013Chanel_McNamara

I was born in Whanganui, and was the eldest of two girls.  I was educated by the Sisters of St Joseph, attending school at Villa Maria, St Mary’s and Sacred Heart Convent.  I then worked as a short-hand typist at State Fire Insurance Company in Whanganui for 2 ½ years.

I entered the Sisters of St Joseph in 1953 and was initially under the direction of Sister Cletus at Mt St Joseph.  My training led me to teaching at Sacred Heart College in Whanganui for about 16 years, then at Tenison College in Hastings, Hawkes Bay.  I then taught at St Mary’s School in Hastings.  There were lots of extra-curricular activities such as Legion of Mary groups, music teaching, caring for boarders at SHC and netball coaching.

I returned to Sacred Heart College at the end of the 1970’s, and had a 6 month sabbatical at Kairos Spirituality Centre in Sydney in 1978.

Following my time teaching, I lived in communities at Gonville in Whanganui, Nazareth Convent, and at Mt St Joseph as Congregational Bursar.

In 1987 I went to Auckland Diocese as a pastoral worker and was initially with the people of Warkworth/Wellsford parish, and then I moved on to Maungaturoto and Whangaparaoa.  In 1993 I returned to Whanganui, and was the Congregational Secretary for 4 years.  During that time I became involved in caring for the sick, the elderly and walking alongside those with disabilities.
