athena.jpgIn 1989, the Athena Sisters Collective, Palmerston North, became affiliated to the Sisters of St Joseph. In order to attract funding and to be of greater benefit to more people by having collective resources, the group asked that they operate as a charitable trust under the umbrella of the Sisters of St Joseph. This was agreed to by the Sisters who gave their blessing to the new venture

The Athena Collective recently made a submission to the Palmerston North City Council 2013/14 Annual Plan, naming several initiatives they would like to see undertaken to make areas of the city more accessible for all.
These initiatives included :
- providing mobility scooters for hire in the central city and Esplanade;
- the need to make footpaths, kerbs, safer and smoother for use  by elderly, those in wheelchairs, on mobility scooters;
- a need for a safer play area for pre-school children in the Square.

Athena members Mary Anne Mechen and Jean Hera spoke to this at a Public hearing on 17.05.13
